Sharing files on Windows

Learn how to send and receive files securely and easily over Meshnet on Windows.
This guide provides the information you need to start sharing files over Meshnet on Windows.

Before you begin

Make sure that the device you want to share files with meets the following criteria:
Note
You can add devices to your Meshnet in two ways, depending on device ownership:

Send files

You can initiate a file transfer from the NordVPN app, by using the Windows shortcut menu, or by using Command Prompt.
Tip
You can initiate file transfers even if the desired peer device is offline. As soon as the device becomes active, it will receive the transfer notification. If the Always accept transfers option is enabled, the transfer starts automatically without needing confirmation.

Method 1: From the NordVPN app

  1. 1.
To begin, do any of the following in your NordVPN app:
    • Go to the Meshnet
      tab and click Share files.
      The "Share files" card highlighted.
    • Go to the Dashboard
tab and, under File sharing, click Start new transfer.
  2. 2.
Upload the files you want to transfer by either:
    • Clicking anywhere in the Drag and drop files here area, selecting the files in the File Explorer dialog, and clicking Open. You can choose a single file or multiple files at once.
Clicking "Open" with multiple files selected.
    • Navigating to the file location and then dragging the files you want to share to the Drag and drop files here area.
      Dragging files to upload
  3. 3.
Under Your devices or External devices, find the device you want to share the files with and click Send.
    "Send" button highlighted.
You can share the same attachment with multiple devices. Click the Send button next to each device you want to share with, one at a time.
Tip
If you have many linked devices, you can simplify the search by selecting the Show only devices that allow receiving files from you checkbox. After selecting this option, only active devices that have enabled the file sharing permission for your device will be displayed.
Note You can only send files to the devices that have the file sharing permission enabled for your device. Otherwise, you’ll find a button labeled Sending not allowed in place of the Send button. For more information, see File sharing permissions.
The file transfer begins when the recipient accepts your download request on their device. For details, consult the appropriate guides:

Method 2: Using the context menu

  1. 1.
On your computer, right-click the file or folder you want to share. You can also right-click a group of files after selecting them together.
  2. 2.
Point to Send with NordVPN Meshnet and select the Meshnet peer device you want to share the files with.
Hovering over a peer device from the "Send with NordVPN Meshnet" option list.
Tip If you prefer not to have the Send with NordVPN Meshnet option in your context menu, you can easily disable it. To do this, go to NordVPN Settings
> General and turn off the toggle for Show the Meshnet file sharing option in the Windows context menu.

Method 3: Using Command Prompt

Another method for initiating transfers is via the Windows Command Prompt. However, this approach allows only single-file or single-folder transfers.
To begin a transfer:
  1. 1.
    Open Command Prompt.
  2. 2.
Navigate to the NordVPN installation directory using the cd command, as shown:
    cd "C:\Program Files\NordVPN"
  3. 3.
Run the following command, replacing <nord_name> with the recipient's Nord name and <file_path> with the path to the file or folder you want to share.
    nordvpn -m --send <nord_name> <file_path>
    Example
Command Prompt window with the NordVPN command entered.
The command should bring up the NordVPN app and display the started file transfer.
Note
If the file path contains spaces, it must be surrounded by quotation marks, as such:
nordvpn -m --send secret.meerkat-everest.nord "<file_path>"
Example
nordvpn -m --send secret.meerkat-everest.nord "C:\Users\Meshnet\Pictures\Family picture.jpg"
